Meet Shanna Leonty, Business Manager at South Centre VW.

There are a lot of misconceptions in the car industry especially by women. They think that the big ugly sales person is going to jump on them as soon as they come in the door. That we are going to take their keys and not let them leave the dealership without buying a vehicle.

I got my first car when I was 18 and I had done all of my research. I knew the car I wanted, I knew the colour, and I knew the cost. When I arrived at the dealership I was left out of the entire process. I was with my boyfriend at the time and they began talking about me as if I wasn’t even there. When I left there I left feeling very defeated. I decided I was never going to feel that way again. In 2004 I was hired on as a sale consultant for this dealership.

When you walk through the door as a car salesman there are a lot of things that you learn about. This dealership is very good at not misleading customers, trying to treat customers with respect, being honest; we are all about full disclosure. On our bill of sale we do not hide anything. All of the “misc.” fees that everyone pays are all outlined in black and white. We are not trying to hide it from the customer. I realized this would be a great place to help people with the misconceptions that they have about buying a car.

We want women to be able to come in here, ask questions, and ask them again and again. We want them to be so comfortable with us that they tell their friends about us. There is nothing intimidating about coming to this dealership. You walk in the door and there is a friendly family atmosphere.

They just bought the car, spent 2 hours in the dealer ship. They are hungry and exhausted and now it is my turn to do the credit application with them. I now have to ask them to spend more money to help protect their investment. I would always recommend that people protect their investment. I am the bad guy because I am asking them to spend more money. I don’t want to be the bad guy; I don’t want to be labeled like that.

When you come into my office I want you to feel comfortable. I want you to be able to talk to me like you would talk to anyone. Ask me the questions that you have. If I don’t feel like you have not been out in the proper financing program, I will talk to you about changing it and I will tell you why so that you can make an informed decision. I want people to be comfortable leaving and confident in the decision they made.
